Interview by Aquinnah McGrath

This year, the Avenues Athletics Council made history by welcoming its first middle school member: Lucas Pillemer, an enthusiastic and thoughtful student with a vision to elevate middle school athletics.

When asked how it feels to step into this pioneering role, Lucas didn’t hesitate: “It feels exciting to be a part of the team! I don't have as much stress as I thought I would, probably because you guys seem like a very comforting group of people!” His energy and optimism set the tone for what’s sure to be a meaningful year on the council.

Lucas’s journey began with initiative. Noticing a gap in visibility for middle school athletes, he took action. “I chose to write that email because I noticed how talented the Middle School athletes are, and I think it'd be cool to spotlight them more!” That single message led to a breakthrough opportunity—not just for Lucas, but for every middle school athlete now and in the future.

In addition to his leadership role, Lucas plays goalkeeper for Manhattan Soccer Club, and his passion for the sport is clear: “What I love about soccer is just the environment and how it brings the whole world together!” His appreciation for unity and inclusion directly reflects his goals for the Athletics Council.

Lucas hopes to represent middle schoolers by advocating for more recognition and celebration of their efforts. “I hope to represent the Athletics Council as a middle school rep by spotlighting important events in our Middle School sports teams at Avenues!” One of his ideas includes creating postseason events, such as a recognition ceremony to honor athletes' accomplishments across all levels. “I think the Avenues Athletics Council could try to organize postseason events like a ceremony, if there aren't any,” he added.

But he’s also aware of the challenges middle school athletes face, especially when it comes to varying skill levels and experiences. “Probably the biggest challenge MS athletes have is, when the casual athletes struggle being able to compete with the other athletes who play that sport regularly,” he said. As a council member, he hopes to help build a culture that supports both serious competitors and those just starting out.

When it comes to bridging the middle and upper school athletics communities, Lucas has a plan: “I plan to communicate with the Upper Division athletes through meeting people at meetings with the AAC or watching more Varsity/JV games.”

He draws inspiration from Lamine Yamal, a young soccer star on FC Barcelona: “Somebody in the world of sports who really inspires me is Lamine Yamal… he’s completed so much, and has potential to do more at such a young age!”

If given the chance to create his dream event at Avenues, Lucas wouldn’t hesitate: “My dream school tournament would be a Middle School soccer tournament where you play with random kids from 6–8th grade!” A fun, inclusive way to build community and camaraderie.

With a vision rooted in inclusion, recognition, and growth, Lucas Pillemer is paving the way for a new generation of student-athletes—and proving that leadership doesn’t have an age limit.
