Athlete Spotlight: Kyla Guimaraes

Balancing It All: Kyla’s Approach to Juggling Varsity Sports and Band

For many students, balancing one varsity sport and academics can feel like a full plate. For Kyla, a senior at Avenues and a tri-season varsity athlete, the challenge extends far beyond that. Not only does she compete in basketball, lacrosse, and ultimate frisbee, but she’s also a Second Dan black belt in Taekwondo and a dedicated member of the Advanced Band, where she plays the alto saxophone.

A Packed Schedule
Kyla’s days are jam-packed, and her roles speak to her leadership and dedication. She co-captains the Girls Varsity Basketball team, plays defense in lacrosse, and is an active member of the ultimate frisbee team. In Taekwondo, a year-round commitment, Kyla competes in fall tournaments. Meanwhile, she’s also been a cornerstone of the Advanced Band since freshman year, having switched to the saxophone after years of playing piano and clarinet.

When asked how she manages this demanding schedule, Kyla explained her straightforward yet effective strategy: “I’m always doing the things I need to get done.” She credits her ability to compartmentalize tasks and stagger them based on energy levels. For example, she breaks up sending emails (a task she jokingly says feels like it takes a year) by doing them between homework assignments. “It keeps me moving while still doing thorough work,” she said.

Finding Balance Through Breaks
For Kyla, productivity doesn’t mean constant activity. “Although bus rides to away games can be a productive time for others, that doesn’t work for me,” she said. Instead, she builds in intentional breaks during the day to reset, allowing her to maintain focus and energy for tasks she isn’t as excited about. Prioritizing sleep is also non-negotiable. “I need to feel alert to maintain this type of productivity, so I really prioritize getting sleep,” Kyla said.

Navigating Overlapping Commitments
With sports and band, schedule conflicts are inevitable. Communication is key, Kyla shared. “I am always in close communication with both my coaches and teachers and make sure to talk through methods of prioritization in advance.”

She gave an example of balancing Advanced Band morning practices with lacrosse. While attendance for both is essential, Kyla’s proactive approach to discussing compromises with her coaches and band teacher has allowed her to honor both commitments. Even when game nights and performances collide, Kyla finds a wayoften rushing straight from the court to the band room.

Motivation Through Joy and Community
For Kyla, staying motivated comes naturally because of her genuine love for what she does. “Having something musical and something sporty happening in my life at all times is really important to me,” she said. The variety in her activities keeps her energized and fulfilled, with each passion fueling the other.

Beyond the activities themselves, Kyla finds motivation in the communities she’s a part of. “I have great communities in these spaces,” she said. “Even when I feel tired, there are people around me who keep me motivated and push me to show up fully.”

Advice for Other Students
Kyla’s advice for students trying to balance their own commitments is both practical and inspiring. “Find systems of organization that work for you, practice effective communication, and just do the stuff you have to do,” she said. She also encourages students to find joy in what they’re doing and lean into that energy. And most importantly? “Don’t be afraid to ask for help.”

Kyla’s story is a testament to how balance and passion can go hand in hand. Whether on the court, field, or in the band room, she’s found ways to thrive—and inspire others along the way.

Celebrating the Girls Varsity Basketball Seniors

The final home game of the season marked a bittersweet milestone for the senior members of the Avenues Girls Varsity Basketball Team. Senior Night was a time to celebrate their journey, honor their growth, and reflect on the friendships and lessons that will stay with them long after the last buzzer sounds. From freshman year to now, these athletes have experienced triumphs, challenges, and unforgettable moments, all shaping them into the players—and people—they are today.

Looking Back: Growth On and Off the Court

For Aquinnah, her journey over the past four years has been transformational.

"Basketball has given me confidence—not just in my skills as a player, but in myself as a person. Being on this team has pushed me to take more opportunities and overcome personal fears or boundaries I never thought I would," she reflected.

More than just a sport, basketball became a platform for personal growth, resilience, and meaningful connections. The friendships built through long practices, tough games, and team bonding moments are ones that will last beyond high school.

For Cami, being on the team meant stepping outside of her comfort zone.

"I always used to stick by my close friends, but through basketball, I have made some of my best friends. It has also taught me how to manage my time. With practice four to five times a week, balancing my time became an important skill I’ll take with me to college."

Lessons That Last a Lifetime

Each senior has taken away valuable lessons from their time on the team.

For Aquinnah, one of the most unexpected lessons came from a simple challenge set by Coach Cruz: stop apologizing so much.

"Coach Cruz threatened to make us do push-ups every time someone said sorry, and I realized it was a habit I needed to break! Playing basketball has taught me that making mistakes is part of the game—and part of life."

She also emphasized the importance of embracing discomfort.

"I've realized it is okay to be uncomfortable. Whether it’s pushing yourself in a tough game or stepping into a leadership role, growth comes from those moments where you challenge yourself."

For Khairat, a key takeaway was understanding the value of every team member.

"Don't get discouraged if you don't get as much playing time. The people on the bench are equally as important as the players on the court. The energy from the bench transfers to how the people on the court play."

Unforgettable Senior Night Moments

Senior Night was filled with love, laughter, and a few tears. The team came together to celebrate the seniors’ contributions and the impact they’ve had on the program.

For Sandhya, the experience was about more than just basketball—it was about the incredible culture they created together.

"Being a part of this vibrant culture, where every day we were able to not only play basketball but also create amazing memories, is something I’ll miss the most."

Cami reminisced about a lighthearted but memorable pre-game moment.

"My favorite part of Senior Night was before the game when the whole team was in the locker room putting on tattoos! We were all laughing, and spirits were super high."

For Aquinnah, the most emotional moment came when the seniors gave speeches to each other.

"Hearing my teammates talk about what this team has meant to them and how we’ve impacted each other was incredibly emotional. It made me realize just how much this experience has shaped all of us. Seeing everyone so emotional reinforced how close we’ve become and how much we truly care about one another."

After the game, the seniors continued the celebration with dinner, reminiscing about their best basketball memories both on and off the court.

"It was truly the perfect way to wrap up such a special chapter of our lives," Aquinnah said.

Looking Ahead

While this chapter is coming to an end, the impact of the Avenues basketball program will stay with these seniors forever. The lessons learned, friendships formed, and challenges overcome have prepared them for whatever comes next—both on and off the court.

To the seniors: Thank you for your leadership, dedication, and heart. Your legacy will continue to inspire the next generation of Avenues athletes.

Girls Varsity Basketball: A Season of Growth, Unity, and Success

The Girls Varsity Basketball team is making waves this season, starting undefeated and showing immense potential both on and off the court. With the recent merger of JV and Varsity, the team has embraced change, growing stronger as a unit. To get an inside perspective, we sat down with Kate, one of the players who has been part of both teams, to discuss the transition, team chemistry, and their journey so far.

Transitioning to a Unified Team

The merger of JV and Varsity has brought new dynamics to the team. Kate reflected on the experience, noting, “It’s been interesting to see how the differences in maturity create a great learning environment. Younger players can learn from those who’ve been on the team longer, and everyone contributes in their own way.”

With four dedicated coaches (Coach De La Cruz, Coach Jacob, Coach Booker and Coach Luttinger), the team has benefitted from individualized attention. “Sometimes in practice, we break into four groups, each led by a coach. This allows us to focus on specific skills tailored to our positions rather than general drills. It’s been a game-changer,” Kate explained.

Building Chemistry and Community

The larger team has fostered a stronger sense of community and teamwork. “The diversity on the team has been amazing,” Kate said. “It allows people to rest when needed and keeps the energy on the court high. A bigger team means a bigger community.”

Kate shared a moment that stood out to her as a testament to the team’s values. “In our first team meeting, we had a group conversation about the values we wanted to embody—welcome, safety, and respect. Hearing everyone’s voices, from captains to new freshmen, was powerful and set the tone for the season.”

The Keys to an Undefeated Start

The team’s hard work and commitment have been pivotal in their undefeated run so far. “Everyone has been giving their all,” Kate said. “Last year, the smaller team meant less competition for playing time. This year, the bigger roster adds a healthy pressure—everyone pushes each other to be their best, which raises the overall level of play.”

Overcoming Challenges

Like any season, challenges arise. For Kate, missing practices due to illness was difficult. “Even though I couldn’t fully participate, I stayed engaged. For our first game, I managed the book and gave players tips. It felt great to still contribute to the team’s success,” she shared. The support of the coaching staff has been a crucial factor. “They’ve been incredibly understanding and always find ways to help.”

Highlights and Hopes

One of Kate’s favorite memories so far was the team’s first win. “It was a turning point,” she said. “It helped us believe in each other and trust each other’s abilities, especially since so many of us hadn’t played together before.”

Looking ahead, Kate is excited to grow closer with her teammates and continue building trust and camaraderie. “The more connected we are, the better we’ll be on the court,” she said.

A Promising Season Ahead

With strong leadership, a unified team, and an unwavering commitment to hard work, the Girls Varsity Basketball team is poised for an incredible season. As they aim to maintain a strong record, they’re not just chasing wins—they’re building a legacy of teamwork, growth, and respect.

Coach Spotlight - Coach Cruz (12/11/24)

Spotlight on Coach De La Cruz: Vision, Values, and Building a Unified Team

The basketball season is off to an exciting start as the Girls’ Varsity Basketball team, led by Head Coach De La Cruz, takes on the challenge of merging programs and pushing toward a championship. In a recent interview, Coach Cruz reflected on her personal journey in sports, the lessons she’s learned, and her vision for this season.

From the Diamond to the Court: A Journey of Passion

Coach Cruz’s introduction to basketball wasn’t typical. “Baseball was my first sport,” she shared. “At the end of a baseball season, during a team picnic, I noticed a group of girls playing basketball at the park. They invited me to join, and not long after, I started playing on their club team. I’ve been in love with the game ever since.”

Though Cruz began basketball in sixth grade, she quickly found her stride. Her high school years proved pivotal, where she shined as an MVP, leading her team to its first—and so far only—championship. She achieved a milestone of 2,000 career points, a record that still stands.

Rising Through Adversity

While basketball was an outlet during her school years, the challenges grew during her college career. “College basketball was more serious, both physically and mentally. Being away from my family and support system was tough,” Coach Cruz recalled. “But it made me stronger, and I’m grateful for those experiences.”

Building a Legacy as a Coach

Now in her eighth year coaching at Avenues, Coach Cruz reflects on the joy of leading the team. “I remember thinking I got lucky with my first group of girls, but year after year, it’s been the same. Our culture is welcoming and fun, yet competitive. Even though basketball isn’t everyone’s main sport, the sense of community and teamwork is amazing to see.”

Coach Cruz values more than just wins and losses. “Communication, self-advocacy, discipline, and forming strong bonds are at the heart of what I teach,” she said. “Sportsmanship and staying composed in tough situations are lessons my players can carry for life.”

Merging Teams: Challenges and Opportunities

This season brought an unexpected challenge: merging the JV and Varsity teams. “It was unfortunate we had to combine, especially during such an exciting time for women’s basketball,” Coach Cruz explained. “But one strong team is better than two small ones. This decision ensures the girls who are committed to the sport have the best experience possible.”

The merged team benefits from the leadership of five senior players, providing younger teammates a unique opportunity to learn and grow. “It’s a different dynamic, but I believe it will be beneficial in the long run,” Coach Cruz said.

Vision for the Season

Looking ahead, Coach Cruz is clear on her goal: “I want to bring the girls their first championship. This season is about creating bonds, navigating challenges together, and staying disciplined. At the end of the day, the friendships and connections these players build are as important as any title.”

With three games and scrimmages already behind them, the team is finding its rhythm. Under Coach De La Cruz’s leadership, this season promises not just growth on the court but memories and lessons to last a lifetime.
