Posted on 04/02/2025

Contributors: Aquinnah McGrath and Wavey Cole

As the spring season kicks off, the Girls Varsity Lacrosse team is buzzing with new energy, fresh faces, and fierce determination. With over 30 girls trying out this year, the team is growing not just in size but in heart. This week’s Team Spotlight highlights voices from the field—players and coaches alike—offering a glimpse into what makes this team so special. Wavey and Aquinnah talk to some members and the Coach for some insight!

11th Grade Kate SS, New To Lacrosse, Big on Heart

For Kate, joining the lacrosse team was about stepping outside her comfort zone—and into community.

A big part of what motivated me to try out for lacrosse this year was my friends encouraging me... After basketball season ended, I knew I wanted to continue with a team sport, and lacrosse seemed like the perfect next step.

Though it’s her first time picking up a lacrosse stick, she’s embraced the learning curve.
The biggest challenge for me has been learning the sport from scratch... But I’m taking it one step at a time and focusing on improving each day.

Kate is also loving the morning schedule. I actually prefer it because it frees up my afternoons... It’s a great way to start the day—I feel more productive and energized after practice.

What makes her stand out?  I think my commitment and dedication to the sport stand out... I try to be vocal on the field and support my teammates however I can.

She’s found the environment encouraging and uplifting.  It’s been really supportive... Everyone is encouraging each other, and it feels like we’re building a strong team dynamic from the start.

Her goal is clear: To improve and grow as a player... and be a good teammate.

And her advice for future players?  Just show up and give it your all. You don’t have to be an expert—just be willing to learn and put in the effort.

12th Grade Cami P: Veteran Drive with a Personal Goal

Senior defender Cami has her sights set on a personal milestone. I play defense, so I typically don’t get a chance to score... My goal for the season is to score. If I don’t, I’d love to have an assist.

She admits the early mornings are tough, but worth it: I feel more tired in the mornings... but it oddly frees up my time more!

Between practices and fitness classes, Cami’s keeping her edge.

Coach P: Leading with Vision and Heart

At the helm of this dynamic team is Coach P, assisted by Coach Kam (a new member to the Avenues Athletic Department) whose leadership is rooted in both skill and spirit.

We look for dedication, commitment, and willingness to work hard... Motivation can’t be taught, no matter how much coaches try.

Coach P’s coaching philosophy focuses on growth and unity.  Success on the field stems from discipline, teamwork, and constant improvement... I’ll encourage my players to challenge themselves and support one another.

Key goals this season? Trusting each other on the field... Move the ball, take the shot, scoop the ball—we’ll have each other’s backs.

She’s intentional about building chemistry:  We create an open, inclusive atmosphere... and after spring break, we’ll do team-building exercises to strengthen trust.

Coach P’s expectations are simple and powerful: Bring your best effort... focus on communication, resilience, and accountability. We’ll celebrate successes and grow together.

And her closing words say it all:  We have a strong group of student-athletes, and I’m proud to be your coach. I believe in the potential this team has, and I’m excited for the journey ahead.

This season, the Girls Varsity Lacrosse team isn’t just playing to win—they’re building something lasting. From new players stepping into the game to seniors chasing personal goals, this team is all heart. Let’s go, girls!
